Coconut Wax Candle Review: Hemlock Park

Performance

Hemlock Park is the best non-toxic candle brand that I have experienced thus far. Some scent selections carry fragrance more than others, but for most scents that I've tried, you can smell the fragrance even when the candles are not lit, especially before the first burn. I burn my candles on a kitchen island in an open concept living space and the scent carries throughout that space. The sizes of Hemlock Park candles that I burn are 4oz, 7.2oz, and 8oz. I don't burn the big guys (16oz), but I still enjoy the layered, balanced aromas created by Hemlock.

Wood wicks elevate peacefulness and ambiance with their mesmerizing subtle crackle. It's a feature in a candle that I never knew I was missing until I experienced it. It's a delicate visual and audible nuance that makes Hemlock Park candles feel more natural and elegant.

With proper wick maintenance (breezy/covered below), Hemlock Park candles burn super slow and soot-free. The brilliantly designed wick clips allow pretty much every drop of coconut wax to be used without the disappointing self-extinguish that other candles have while a good amount of wax is still left at the bottom.

Let's compare. A 4oz Hemlock Park candle clocked in at 53hrs & 45mins of burn time. Four (4) ounces... that's a small candle with a big burn time. The popular 15oz soy/paraffin wax 3-wick candles (not good wax) burn around 40hrs. Less than 1/3 the size, a 4oz Hemlock Park candle burned 13 more hours than a conventional 3-wick, driving home the performance prowess of Hemlock Park.

Cost

Across all wax types, Hemlock Park is a gem for those of frugal nature. My Pittsburgh, steel mill roots run deep. I appreciate well-built and fairly priced. Coconut wax burns the slowest of all of the candles I've sampled, including clean and not-so-clean versions of various wax types. Revisiting the performance comp from above and layering on a price comp:

Hemlock Park's 8oz candles are currently $26 with a designated burn time of 60hrs. Their 7.2oz candles are designated at 50hrs, but as the price comp chart shows, my 7.2oz Lake Tahoe burned for 61+hrs, indicating that their 8oz may burn longer than 60hrs (I will gather 8oz data for you next). Hemlock Park also carries 16oz candles priced at $42 with a designated 90hr burn time, 10 more hours than burning two 3-wicks back-to-back which would cost $56.

Big annual sale pricing for the conventional 3-wicks is not factored into the comps. BOGO and clearance sales aren't as enticing when you get better burn hours for better candles at a lower price without a sale. With Hemlock Park regularly offering discounts on selected scents and Wyld One's repeat discount, you can take advantage of 15% to 30% off of your selections, so big hoopla sales don't tip the scale. It's quite remarkable when we loop in the non-toxic angle, the reason we're here, of course. You can indulge yourself and loved ones in a clean, cozy atmosphere more economically than spending your hard-earned dollars on paraffin, microcrystalline wax, BHT, 'fragrances', and one unpronounceable ingredient after another.

Forgive me, I'm about 1/2 through a Natural Sloth 9oz beeswax comp for you. It's a seasonal scent, so to avoid burning it for the sake of burning it, I put it on pause. Stats I've collected thus far:

9oz beeswax/50% burned/28+hrs/$35

The beeswax is burning at a little faster rate than the coconut wax and the scent throw is fairly weak. It smells better when it's not lit. There are very few scent choices for this particular brand, and if the 9oz beeswax comes in around 60hrs at $35, my money is still on the Hemlock Park 4oz at $14.

As we boomerang back to the 4oz... Hemlock Park currently has select 4oz jar candles on sale for $10. A Steel City girl's dream, 53hrs of productivity (soothing aroma and cozy atmosphere) for 10 bucks.

Scent Profiles
Plant-based, Phthalate-free, Premium-grade Botanicals

(My insight on a few)

Blood Orange Sage

Refreshing renewal. Bright, layered, and complex. Grounded with a touch of sweetness and warmth. Rejuvenating. Complimentary to a kitchen, breakfast nook, or open living space. Sweet Blood Orange, White Grapefruit, Kumquat, White Sage, Jasmine, Yarrow, Vetiver, Ylang Ylang, Rosewater, Cassia.

Corsica Passport Edition

Bright, sweet, herbaceous. Citrus forward... sweeter citrus not acidic. Unfolds into rich fresh cut herbs. Transports you to an outdoor kitchen in the Mediterranean. More scent throw than JeJu Island (also a citrus profile). Airier than Blood Orange Sage, not as heady. Each of the 3 fragrances shine in this blend. Clementine, Rosemary, Thyme.

Frankincense

If you want to smell Christmas from days of old with a refined flare, this is your candle. Complex, familiar, timeless. With deeper, warmer notes of Amber, Frankincense, and Myrr, it's surprisingly not overbearing. Cypress, Clove, and Neroli offer the right amount of Holiday to the blend. Frankincense, Amber, Thyme, Juniper, Cypress, Myrr, Oakmoss, Clove, Neroli.

Hinoki

Woody, earthy, evergreen. Brightened by a hint of citrus and tingles with a hint of spice. Layered in a way that the overall scent itself doesn't shift to new forms, but it presents something new with each smell. A vibrant, full-bodied twist on evergreen. Hinoki Cypress, Teakwood, Cedar, Blood Orange, Yuzu Citrus, Rosewood, White Sage, Black Peppercorn, Vetiver, Tonka Beans, Foxtail Fir.

Lake Tahoe Passport

Quintessential winter-scape. Like standing amidst mighty fir trees in crisp mountain air. Classic Christmas tree notes fill the space in which it burns. Moss adds earthiness to cut the predominant fir/pine profile while Amber adds a subtle warmer base. Level scent throw, not overbearing, not disappointing. Frazier Fir, Sugar Pine, White Fir, Quaking Aspen, Sierra Foxtail Pine, Cedar, Hemlock Evergreen, Cypress, Amber, Moss.

Lily of the Valley

Delicate, fresh, uplifting. Spring morning air with kisses of dew. Gently floral, sprouting greens, ozone. One of my favorites for spring. Lily of the Valley, the birth flower of May, speaks through sophisticated, complimentary dimensions... the language of Geminis... kismet. Lily of the Valley, Blue Mountain Sage, Vetiver, Clove, Camphor, Green Muguet, Jasmine, Hyacinth.

Palo Santo

Used in aromatherapy for its calming properties. Noted for evoking a sense of nostalgia. Comforting, woody, fresh, slightly smoky with undertones of citrus and mint. Very atmospheric, in that it subtly sets a grounding, cleansing tone in the room. I favor light springy florals, baked goods, and fruity profiles (things you can eat or drink), but Palo Santo albeit moodier strikes a chord with me. A favorable blend featuring this popular scent. Palo Santo Wood, Cypress, Blood Orange, Rosewood, White Sage, Black Peppercorn, Vetiver, Clove.

Pumpkin Crème

Words do no justice for this fall fantasy. All the things right here in this one. My, no questions asked, favorite by Hemlock Park. More dynamic than the average pumpkin spice scented everything. You may as well be sitting in a pumpkin patch eating pumpkin cupcakes and sipping on apple cider. All of fall, all at once. Spicy, sweet, warm, cozy, creamy. Football season in a glass jar. Pumpkin, Vanilla Crème, Ginger, Clove, Nutmeg, Cinnamon, Allspice, Brown Sugar, Winter Chestnut.

Santal

Rich, elegant, warm, inviting. Complex layers, reminiscent of something familiar but not easily placed. Similar to Palo Santal, I find myself intrigued that I like its darker profile, yet it, too, sets the tone of a room. It's broody and dignified like leatherbound books... or is it light and carefree like an evening coastal campfire. Whatever it makes you feel, it makes you feel. Brilliant blend that magnifies the beauty of Santal. Santal, Hinoki Cypress, Sea Salt, Clove, Star Anise, Peppercorn, Rosewood, Amber, Balsam.

Scarlet Rose

If a candle could be an English rose garden... she's it. I'm stunned at how the exact smell of my grandma's roses made it into wax form. Sweet, enticing, lively. We know how candy companies try to sell us watermelon or banana flavor just like room sprays and perfumes try with rose... this is not that. An exact replica of the peach-colored, thorn-covered rose bushes I grew up smelling. Scarlet Rose sits pretty as my number two top pick. Rose Petal, Petitgrain, Palmarosa, Myrtle, Rosewood, California White Sage, Oakmoss.

Wood Wick Trimming

Wick trimming, every type of wick, really does extend the life of your candles. After the first burn, most wood wicks can easily be pinched off with your fingers. Be careful not to pinch too low, as the wick will have a hard time lighting next time. Use a small piece of napkin or paper towel to keep your fingers from getting soot on them and only pinch when the wax is cool and solid. If the wick doesn't break off low enough where you remove a majority of the char, you may prefer using a trim kit or I use scissors to cut back the excess charred wood. A little extra attention will exponentially extend the life of your candles.

Hemlock Park Sustainability

Hemlock Park is a loyal friend to our environment with their eco-conscious ingredients, recyclable & sustainable packaging, carbon-neutral delivery, and partnership with One Tree Planted. There are no environmentally harmful chemicals or toxins in their fragrances or wax. Their glass jars are recyclable, and the wood wicks are FSC-Certified and sourced from sustainable fruit trees. With their One Tree Planted partnership, trees are planted with every purchase made at Hemlock Park. Also recognized by People for the Planet, they were a 2019 Nonprofit Partner Changemaker Honoree. By partnering with Heirloom, Remora, and Charm, carbon removal companies vetted by scientists from Carbon Direct, Hemlock Park offsets their shipping emissions for every order. A formula is used to calculate emissions, and a portion of their revenue is used to remove the generated carbon. You burn bright Hemlock Park.
