I Tried the Zima Dental Pod: Is It Worth It? Is It Low-Tox?

Updated: 3 days ago

IMMEDIATLEY IMPRESSED WITH THE ZIMA DENTAL POD

My standard of practice is to give a product a few good months of use before drawing any conclusions or posting about it. This buzzy little oral appliance cleaner only needed two quick sessions to prove itself as a worthy gadget that exponentially saves time and eliminates aggravation.

Is The Zima Dental Pod Worth the Investment | After I Tried It, My Answer Is Yes... and It's Low-Tox

Does the Zima Dental Pod Work?

RESULTS RIGHT AWAY

In the spirit of how quickly the Zima Dental Pod got after the build-up on my aligners, let's get into the results straight away. I was so satisfied to see the stains and build-up, that I had been brushing like crazy for months, whisked away in minutes. This adorable little pod is a stealthy adversary to stains, plaque, and bacteria.

THE HARD EVIDENCE

Photos, at times, are not the best story tellers, but I wanted to show you what I captured. Even better, the in-person view revealed some really clean aligners after basically one cycle.

SKIP AHEAD IF YOU GET GROSSED OUT EASILY

It grossed me out, but this photo demonstrates the Dental Pod's effectiveness. Please forgive me for sharing/showing what came off of the aligners then precipitated into the water after the cycle. I brushed these things like it was my job, and to no avail.

A FEW STAINS REMAIN

There are a few small spots that still have some staining and build-up, but the overall difference is exceptional. To be fair, I only ran two consecutive cycles, one regular at 5mins and one extended for 15mins. I'm excited and curious to give it another go and see if these deeper stains will break up. I'll report back, as always!

Is the Zima Dental Pod User Friendly?

A BREEZE COMPARED TO MY USUAL ROUTINE

I methodically and obsessively brushed my aligners every morning after popping them out from overnight wear. The process in total took about 15 minutes. I rinsed under warm water, brushed lightly in addition to vigorously, hit every angle, went in every direction as well as circularly, and finished with another thorough rinse. It didn't matter how diligent I was with my maintenance. After about a year of wearing my aligner retainers, I had cloudy colors and super stubborn build-up that was unbothered by my efforts. This was a major frustration and time trap in the mornings. The Zima Dental Pod was a brilliant purchase that I wish I didn't debate for so long.

EASY SET UP

It took but a few minutes to unpackage, read the instructions, pre-wash the removable tank (feature with the Pro), and figure out how to run the longer 15min cycle (option on the Pro). I added enough cold water to hit right between the easy-to-see min and max lines inside the tank. I opted to use a Zima tablet (optional) because I was ready to finally win this fight against the build-up. The instructions call for two minutes for the tablet to dissolve. My tablet took a little longer, about 6-7mins (maybe it doesn't need to dissolve completely before starting her up). Okay, this plump little nugget was ready to go.

EASY TO USE

I popped out my aligners, rinsed them under warm water (a step I added for extra hygiene), and gently placed them in the tank open side up. The lid went on with ease, and the power plug was just as user friendly. The power button isn't quite a button. It doesn't depress or give an audible click, so I fumbled for a brief moment, "is this thing on?"

Once I got it going, I lifted the lid to see what was happening in this cute bundle of ultrasonic business. The aligners were vibrating peacefully, if that makes sense. I was aiming for the longer cycle which requires pressing the power button twice. I thought I did, but my little friend called it quits in 5mins, the normal cycle. You can run consecutive cycles, so I gave it another try to see if I could get to the longer cycle... I should have taken my time reading instructions. Anyway, one press displays a light blue light, and two presses displays a darker blue light. Got it!

EASY CLEAN UP

The cycle is over when the blue light turns off and the faint hum stops (it runs very quietly). The lid comes off as easily as it went on and the tank lifts from the power base equally as smooth. I took the tank and lid to the sink, removed my aligners, gave them a quick warm water rinse, dumped the tank and gave it a quick wash being careful not to wet the circular gold power plates on the bottom, patted everything dry, and let each piece air dry a few minutes before putting my little Humpty Dumpty back together again. That's it. So easy.

Is the Zima Dental Pod Worth the Price?

QUALITY OVER SAVINGS

The Zima Pod is considered the Ferrari of at-home dental appliance cleaning systems. I have not tried any other system to make a fair comparison, but when I considered bacteria, potential cavities, and the possibility of my aligners making me sick?... I relied on the old adage; you get what you pay for.

SOLID CONSTRUCTION

I really liked the immediate tactile feedback upon handling the Zima Dental Pod. It has a good weight to it, not at all heavy, but it feels very well constructed. It sits soundly on a flat surface and there's no wiggle or gapping between pieces, the electronic components are well made, and the exterior finish is beautiful. Aesthetically, whichever color you choose, I can see it seamlessly blending into your decor. It's a device that doesn't call attention to itself but has an endearing cuteness when it catches your glance.

TIME IS MONEY

I cannot stress enough how much time I wasted manually rinse-prepping and brushing my aligners. I started skipping nights of wearing them because I couldn't afford another 15-20mins the next morning, especially when I couldn't see results.

FRUSTRATION TRADEOFF

The fact that I no longer have to resentfully surrender time while flinging toothpaste foam on the mirror, the countertop, the faucet, and myself is reason enough to have made the investment. I can't put a price on a peaceful start to the day.

TOOTHPASTE/TOOTHBRUSH TRADEOFF

If you run your Pod without tablets, your investment is one-and-done. Unnecessarily speeding through tubes of toothpaste will be a thing of the past as will untimely wear & tear on your toothbrush. High jacking toothpaste to use on items that aren't your teeth and prematurely replacing your toothbrushes come at a cost. Extending the lifespan of your paste and brush is a welcome tradeoff.

CONTRARY TO SOME COMMENTARY

Some articles, tips, and reviews suggest you can easily keep your dental appliances just as clean with manual brushing. After a year of fruitless effort, I can attest to the fact that I absolutely could not.

Are the Zima Dental Pod & Dental Pod Pro Low-Tox?

CHEMICAL-FREE CLEANING

Using only cold water and ultrasonic waves, Zima's Dental Pods do not use or introduce chemicals during the cleaning process. That is about as low-tox as it gets. No questionable toothpaste ingredients or residues get absorbed or left behind.

SANS TABLETS

Using the Dental Pod without tablets is an excellent low-tox, no chemicals method for cleaning oral appliances.

Zima Dental Pods: A Sustainable Option

PLASTIC NEUTRAL CERTIFICATION

The plastic footprint created by Zima, including packaging, is measured then offset by recovering an equal amount of plastic from the environment and recycling it. Having a Plastic Neutral Certification ensures Zima is not contributing to global plastic waste.

ECO-FRIENDLY PARTNERS

Zima partners with rePurpose Global to focus on plastic waste reduction, supporting waste workers, and target areas where plastic is most likely to enter natural environments on a global scale.

LESS TOOTHPASTE TUBE WASTE

Using less toothpaste means fewer toothpaste tubes in landfills. The stats on how these tubes impact our environment is chilling.

COLD WATER

The Pods are designed to use cold water which lowers energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

A Few Things to Consider

TABLET INGREDIENTS

If you prefer using Zima tablets, they are free from chemicals like SLS, sodium benzoate, and persulfates which can be found in traditional cleaning tablets. Zima tablets are non-corrosive to Dental Pod tanks. They are also gluten-free, lactose-free, and cruelty-free.

  • INGREDIENTS LIST: sodium percarbonate, sodium bicarbonate, citric acid, sodium sulfate, sodium carbonate, potassium sulfate, peppermint oil, maltodextrin, disodium cocyl glutamate (coconut derived), potassium sorbate

*If you have sensitivities to sulfates or essential oils, check with your provider.

TANK MATERIALS

Zima Dental Pod tanks are composed of antibacterial stainless steel and silver alloy. Zima does not explicitly state in product specs that their tanks are nickel-free or free from trace heavy metals. If you have a nickel allergy or are sensitive to heavy metals, you should contact Zima to request the tank's material safety data sheet. In general, the Dental Pod process is safe for most users and should not introduce heavy metals into appliances.

PACEMAKER WARNING

Zima recommends consulting with your physician before using their Pods if you have a pacemaker or other implantable electronic device.

I'm hopeful that my experience with the Zima Dental Pod offers useful insight on whether or not it's worth the investment and if it's a good choice for low-tox dental appliance cleaning. Thank you for spending some time with me.
